Immutable Targets Mid-2027 Ethereum Rollup Shift With One-Second Block Time

Transaction costs are expected to rise slightly, native withdrawals could take about seven days, and block production is expected to pause for several hours during migration.

Immutable says its planned overhaul of Immutable Chain would halve the time between blocks and move the network to Ethereum rollup architecture, while bringing fee and withdrawal tradeoffs for users.

The chain would leave its custom Geth fork for OP Stack software. Immutable says the design should let it adopt security patches more quickly. It pairs Ethereum data availability with proof-based bridging. The expected interval between blocks would fall from two seconds to one.

The OP Stack is software for building independent Ethereum layer-2 networks, a model EconoTimes has covered in reporting on ZiskVM's test of the software.

Immutable expects a modest increase in transaction costs, while native withdrawals may take about seven days. Block production is expected to pause for several hours during the move. The company says account records, balances, contracts and approvals are expected to remain intact; nearly all users and developers should be able to proceed without making changes.

Immutable is targeting mid-2027 for the migration.
