India's planned Bengaluru-Mumbai sleeper train may begin with a Nov. 1 special, while proposed schedules put its overnight journey at about 16 hours for passengers.
India's Ministry of Railways said in May that the service was expected to start soon, without giving a launch date, timetable or fares. Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan said in an Oct. 20 social media post that operations would begin Nov. 1. That date has not appeared in a ministry timetable.
South Western Railway sources told The Times of India that a special inaugural trip is being considered for Nov. 1. The newspaper reported that regular commercial service has no notified start date, so the proposed special does not confirm when passengers can book regular trips.
Moneycontrol reported that the proposed route would cover 1,118 kilometers. Its schedule gives the Bengaluru-to-Mumbai journey as 16 hours and five minutes and the return trip as 15 hours and 45 minutes. The railway has not published a final schedule.
Moneycontrol's proposed stop list includes Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune and Kalyan. The Bengaluru terminal also remains unsettled in the reports: Mohan's April approval post named KSR Bengaluru, while Moneycontrol later reported that Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal was likely.
The Times of India reported that the proposed train would have 16 coaches and 823 berths. Separate Ministry of Railways material describes capacity for the Vande Bharat sleeper design, but does not confirm the final configuration for this route.
India's first Vande Bharat sleeper began service on the Howrah-Guwahati corridor in January, according to the ministry. The ministry describes the sleeper design as having three air-conditioned accommodation classes.
A parliamentary answer listed track capacity, available train paths, rolling stock and supporting infrastructure among general factors for introducing train services. It did not identify which factors shape the Bengaluru-Mumbai proposal. Nov. 1 remains the date cited for a possible inaugural special; regular-service details have not been announced.
