French demonstrators rallied nationwide over living costs and education Saturday as turnout estimates diverged and police used tear gas and water cannons during clashes in Paris.

France’s Interior Ministry estimated that 110,000 people attended the Paris march and counted 410,000 across demonstrations nationwide.

The Associated Press reported that the CGT union’s national estimate was nearly 800,000.

Near Porte de Vincennes, where the route ended, the Associated Press reported clashes involving projectiles thrown by some demonstrators and police use of tear gas and water cannons.

The Paris police prefecture said more than 500 protesters were clashing with police and officers were moving to make arrests and disperse the crowd, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Associated Press cited the Paris prosecutor’s office for 64 arrests linked to the march and said 40 people were taken into police custody.
