Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Wednesday that U.S. threats stood in the way of talks with Tehran, renewing his criticism of Washington after Pakistan's mediation meetings produced no announced agreement.
Iran's state-run IRNA news agency carried the remarks, Anadolu Agency reported. Pezeshkian called on Washington to acknowledge Iran's rights and end what he described as threats, bullying and aggression. He also accused the United States of failing to honor its commitments, arguing that a party should uphold a signed agreement even if it later finds the terms unfavorable.
The comments follow Pakistan's Oct. 20 mediation meetings in Tehran. Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met four senior Iranian officials during the visit. Official accounts of those meetings announced no agreement.
In his earlier meeting with Munir, Pezeshkian said Washington had to end threats and lift sanctions before negotiations could begin, according to remarks carried by Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. Pakistani sources said the two sides would maintain indirect contact through mediators.
