Al Jazeera says Israel's latest 90-day extension keeps its broadcasts and offices closed, and says neither it nor its lawyers were allowed to examine the confidential material cited to justify the measure.
A Tel Aviv court approved the Israeli government's renewal last week, the network reported. The restrictions also limit access to Al Jazeera's websites and digital platforms, according to the outlet.
Al Jazeera disputes the allegations used to support the ban and called the extension “an assault” on press freedom. The network said its lawyers are assessing the decision and that it may take further legal action.
The current restrictions follow a May 2024 cabinet decision to shut Al Jazeera's operations in Israel. The network reported that parliament had passed a law allowing authorities to temporarily close foreign broadcasters considered a national security threat. In September that year, Israeli forces entered Al Jazeera's Ramallah office in the occupied West Bank, took equipment and documents, and closed the office, the outlet reported.
