Israeli airstrikes killed at least three Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Saturday, according to Palestinian health officials, as violence continued despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
One Israeli strike near the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza killed Basir Al-Bursh, the son of Munir Al-Bursh, director-general of Gaza’s health ministry, medics and relatives said.
The Israeli military said it targeted several militants on Saturday and identified Basir Al-Bursh among those struck, but provided no additional details. Hamas, the Palestinian militant group governing Gaza, did not immediately respond.
Munir Al-Bursh previously lost a daughter in an Israeli airstrike in December 2023 and was wounded in the same attack, according to relatives and medical officials.
Reuters video showed Al-Bursh carrying his son’s body, wrapped in a blanket, as mourners helped transport it by ambulance to a hospital. At Al Shifa Hospital, mourners later gathered to offer condolences.
Separate Israeli strikes elsewhere in Gaza added to Saturday’s death toll. Palestinian civil defence officials and medics said one man was killed in Shejaia, east of Gaza City, while another person died when an airstrike hit a vehicle in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan district.
The Israeli military said the Sheikh Radwan attack targeted a Hamas militant. The strike left the vehicle heavily damaged.
Palestinian authorities say more than 73,000 people have been killed during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which began after Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel in October 2023, killing about 1,200 people.
A U.S.-brokered Gaza ceasefire reached last year calls for the territory’s eventual reconstruction. However, negotiations have made limited progress amid disagreements over Hamas disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
Gaza health officials say more than 1,300 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since the ceasefire took effect. The Israeli military says four Israeli soldiers have been killed during the same period.
