Italy’s Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) Tsunami Warning Centre (CAT) canceled an orange alert for the Aeolian Islands Friday after a magnitude 5.7 quake in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea.

CAT raised the warning to orange at 6:29 a.m. ET (10:29 UTC) and canceled it at 7:22 a.m. ET (11:22 UTC), 53 minutes later, after reviewing readings from two sea-level gauges, according to its update summarized in EconoTimes’ earlier report on the alert. The orange alert covered waves below 50 centimeters and coastal run-up below 1 meter.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) placed the quake 61 kilometers west-northwest of Leni at a depth of 10 kilometers. INGV listed the event at 5.5 Mw.

The Independent quoted Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla as saying authorities had not received reports of anyone being hurt or property damage by the time he issued his statement. Lagalla said a possible evacuation of some public buildings was precautionary and urged coastal residents to keep clear of the sea and follow directions from authorities.
