JPM Coin Transfers on Ethereum Require Approval; USD Coin Redemptions Have Account Rules

JPMorgan limits Ethereum transfers of JPMD to approved institutions. USDC can move between wallets without Circle Mint, but direct dollar redemption generally requires an eligible account, subject to the MiCAR-compliant exception.

JPMorgan restricts JPM Coin transfers on Ethereum to approved institutions, while Circle’s rules place a separate account condition on direct USD Coin redemptions, illustrating two different controls on dollar-linked digital assets.

JPMD is a digital representation of dollar deposits held by JPMorgan customers. Under the arrangement announced Oct. 19, JPMorgan approval is required for JPMD transfers on Ethereum. Ethereum is a public network; access to transfer this token there remains limited. JPMD had previously been offered on Base, as described in EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of JPMorgan’s Ethereum expansion.

Circle’s account condition applies to direct redemption, rather than ordinary onchain transfers. A Circle Mint account is not required simply to send or receive USDC. Circle Mint generally serves as the account gateway for converting USDC directly into dollars; the terms include an exception for MiCAR-compliant redemptions. Sending or receiving USDC alone does not provide access to that direct-redemption service.

The rules affect different steps: JPMorgan’s approval determines which institutions may transfer JPMD on Ethereum, while Circle Mint eligibility governs who can generally redeem USDC directly for dollars.
