Jamie Dornan Revealed to Have Suffered from Severe Depression Before Working with Dakota Johnson in ‘Fifty Shades’ Movie Series

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are still best known as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele for their roles in the “Fifty Shades” movie series. Although they have been in various projects before, it cannot be denied that they got their biggest break by accepting the roles in E.L. James novel-based film. The movie really got their names out there as it was hugely successful worldwide.

Then again, behind the success of the film, there were behind-the-scenes stories before Dornan and Johnson made it in the entertainment industry. As for the former, it was revealed that prior to coming to Hollywood, the Irish actor was a total mess. He suffered from depression and drown himself with booze so it was a miracle that he got this far.

Jamie Dornan appeared on Jay Rayner’s “Out to Lunch” podcast and there he disclosed about his struggles before his “Fifty Shades” fame with Dakota Johnson. He said that he owed it to his family that he sobered up and got his break in showbiz because his depression almost got the best of him.

The series of unfortunate events in his family led to his depression but it was his mother Lorna’s death that really affected him. He also lost four of his friends in a car crash and he was just a teenager so everything weighs heavily on him.

“My mum died when I was 16 that was obviously a life-altering, insane, horrendous thing to happen then four of my friends killed themselves in a car crash when I was 17,” the actor narrated. “I had a very rough couple of years that I guess I’m still dealing with both of those things today, every day.”

He turned to drinking, to cope with the tragedies and even dropped out from university. But later on, he realized that he needs to change or he will be doomed. His life started to change in 2001 when his sisters pushed for him to apply for UK’s Channel 4’s “Model Behaviour.”

“My sister had seen this ad for ‘Model Behaviour’ and it was just something to do, it got me out of the house,” he said.

From the reality show, Jamie went on to star in dramas and then was signed for “Fifty Shades” with Dakota Johnson. Today, he is worth $12 million.

Meanwhile, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson have yet to get together again for a reunion project that their fans have been asking for years. They are currently involved in different movies but there is still a big chance for their team up in the future.
