Japan’s Ministry of Defense said a Tokyo meeting between Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. Xavier Brunson highlighted the importance of closer regional defense ties for Indo-Pacific stability.

Brunson also leads the United Nations Command and the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, the ministry said. The ministry’s post identified U.S. Ambassador to Japan George Glass and Gen. Hiroaki Uchikura, head of Japan’s Joint Staff, as participants.

The post said officials supported closer security work with regional partners as a way to maintain peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific. It did not specify whether the discussion covered North Korea or security coordination among Japan, South Korea and the United States.
