Japan’s Nikkei 225 was 0.25% lower Monday afternoon as its semiconductor index fell 1.77%, leaving the benchmark below its two previous closes despite gains among many shares in an earlier snapshot.

At 12:31 a.m. ET (04:31 UTC) Monday, equivalent to 1:31 p.m. Japan Standard Time, Nikkei Inc. data put the Nikkei 225 at 62,535.06, down 158.10 points. The Nikkei Semiconductor Stock Index stood at 20,400.90. The intraday benchmark level was below the Oct. 22 close of 62,907.84 and the Oct. 23 finish of 62,693.16, extending its decline across three sessions.

In an earlier update at 9:26 p.m. ET Sunday (01:26 UTC Monday), Reuters reported the Nikkei down 0.43% and the broader Topix up 0.48%. Reuters counted 166 advancing Nikkei constituents and 59 declining. Sumco, Kokusai Electric and Screen Holdings fell in that snapshot; Inpex, JGC Holdings and Mitsubishi Corp. gained, Reuters reported.

Nikkei Inc.’s Oct. 23 breakdown assigned 40.74% of index weight to technology and 24.09% to consumer goods. Reuters linked chip-share declines to Friday’s weaker Wall Street session.

The Associated Press listed central-bank decisions and earnings reports from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon among the market events scheduled for the week.
