Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to travel to Tehran on Oct. 19 for talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on regional tensions and bilateral ties.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the ministers would address international and regional issues, particularly the situation around Iran and measures Russia says it is pursuing to ease tensions. They would also discuss carrying out understandings reached in recent high-level contacts and practical ways to strengthen their countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership.

Before the Tehran visit, Lavrov is scheduled to attend the ninth Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Strategic Dialogue in Manama, Bahrain, on Sunday, Oct. 18. Zakharova said the foreign ministers would discuss regional and international matters, including the Persian Gulf, and Lavrov would hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines.

Separately, the Associated Press reported Oct. 11 that negotiations and efforts to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz were continuing. The AP also reported that Iran’s Mohsen Rezaei called the latest U.S. response to a proposal “insufficient.”
