Legally Blind Teen Can See Again, And Is Helping Visually Impaired Children See their Mothers For The First Time this Mother’s Day

TORONTO and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., April 17, 2018 -- Joel Gomez, a 14-year-old boy born with legal blindness, can now see thanks to eSight, a breakthrough pair of electronic glasses that help individuals living with legal blindness and low vision actually see. Joel is now looking to make history on May 13^th, by helping 13 legally blind children see their mothers on Mother’s Day. Joel is seeking to raise $130,000 on GoFundMe during this campaign, which is the amount needed to help all of these 13 visually impaired children get eSight.

“I will never forget the moment Joel tried on eSight for the first time. It was incredible. He looked across the room at me and said, ‘Mom, I can see you.’ I’ll never forget that day,” said Joel’s mother, Rynn Whitley Gomez. “Joel loves to play the ukulele and other instruments but struggled with reading music, and now he can read sheet music perfectly. eSight has also been a tremendous help at school because prior to eSight, Joel could not read what was written on the board even from the front row.”

As a giving child, Joel realized very quickly how pervasive and harrowing of a disease vision loss is, and, unfortunately, how many individuals are not able to afford this revolutionary technology that has given him his sight back. Joel has partnered with eSight and GoFundMe to raise money for these children and give them a gift that they will never forget. His motivation is driven by his own understanding of how important this technology can be for children, having experienced the impact it has already had on his life.

“I want to help others like me living with vision loss to actually see and be their best selves,” said Joel. “Because of eSight, I feel like nothing can stop me. I think every kid deserves this feeling." Joel’s GoFundMe goal will help 13 children ranging in ages from five to 17 and spanning four different continents. They have a variety of different eye conditions, but they will be able to see again, upon raising enough money.
