‘Luke Cage’ recently released a new featurette ahead of its scheduled premiere on September 30. It examined the influence of Hip-Hop for the music of the upcoming Marvel-based Netflix series starring Mike Colter in the lead role.
According to Comicbook.com, the upcoming Netflix web television series dropped a new featurette that focused on the influence of Hip-Hop classics during an exploration of the show’s soundtrack. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker described the new series as a "Wu Tang-ification of the Marvel universe."
The series’ score is created by music supervisor Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad while its episodes are named after tracks from the influential Hip-Hop duo Gang Starr, according to Mic.com.
Young explained, "From a musical perspective, Ali and I look at this as we're creating 13 albums, know what I'm saying? It's 13 episodes like 13 albums.”
He continued, “We have music that is inspired by A Tribe Called Quest but at the same time inspired by Wu, and Ennio Morricone, and we all came together and said that we all wanted to make something great. Not just for black people or minorities, just something great, that just happens to be based on our culture. It was one of those things where I was like yo, we have a chance to make history here."
Hoker also revealed, "All the episodes are named after different Gang Starr songs, so like this one is Soliloquy of Chaos, the first one is Moment of Truth, I mean, it's all kind of influenced like that.”
He added, “One of the things I was explaining is like the speed of Hip Hop. It happens at the speed of thought so if you really ran into Luke, and then all of a sudden, boom, there's gonna be a beat. That's all it takes."
The upcoming television series will star Mike Colter as Marvel’s newest superhero. According to Inverse, the series will take place in New York City and follows Luke, a man with a secret past who was born and raised in Harlem. He was rebellious and often caused trouble in the mean streets with his equally rowdy group of friends.
However, a sabotaged experiment leaves him with superhuman abilities such as super strength, speed and endurance as well as an accelerated healing factor and nigh invulnerability. He is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat.
‘Luke Cage’ is an upcoming web television series to premiere on Netflix on September 30, 2016. It set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is intended as the third Netflix Marvel-based television show following ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Daredevil’.
