ATCHISON, Kan., April 23, 2018 -- MGP (NASDAQ:MGPI), a leading supplier of premium distilled spirits and specialty wheat proteins and starches, has eliminated the use of all styrofoam and single use plastics, such as cups, plates, utensils, straws and stirrers, at company facilities, replacing those items with compostable and biodegradable alternatives. Timed in alignment with the international observance of Earth Day yesterday, this move represents another step in MGP’s overall sustainability initiative.
“Sustainability is a key component of MGP’s long-term strategic plan, and we are excited to be taking this next step in that effort,” said MGP President and CEO Gus Griffin. “Eliminating single use plastics at all of our facilities will benefit our employees, communities and our planet. This is a significant effort, and clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to sustainability.”
This measure follows MGP’s recently announced commitment to source 100 percent of the company’s electricity needs from renewable wind power. The commitment was made through a three-year agreement with Westar Wind, a Green-e certified program offered by Westar Energy. As previously noted, the agreement can be renewed at the end of three years and makes MGP the largest Westar customer to commit to 100 percent renewable electric energy.
To further the company’s sustainability efforts, MGP will continue to explore and invest in additional initiatives to reduce water usage, emissions and waste.
