Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) launched SSDS+ on Oct. 20, adding a platform for recording tokenized bonds and sukuk, a form of Islamic bond, alongside payment settlement in central bank money.

The setup links two functions. SSDS+ records issuance, safekeeping, ownership and transfers, while RENTAS+ handles payments for purchases. Together, the systems support settlement at any hour. SSDS+ extends BNM’s wholesale Scripless Securities Depository System and combines cloud infrastructure with distributed-ledger technology.

BNM introduced RENTAS+ in 2025 to enable continuous interbank settlement. The payment system gives SSDS+ a channel for settling purchases while the securities platform maintains the bond records. The arrangement connects digital securities records with payments in central bank money. More details are in EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of the SSDS+ launch.

Malaysia has described SSDS+ as ready to support tokenized retail offerings of government and corporate bonds. The platform’s role in recording ownership begins with the digital bond issuance.

A U.S. Treasury repo trade at DTCC’s July 15 production event used a token representing a Treasury security already held at The Depository Trust Company (DTC). The initiative included production trades and drew participation from more than 30 firms; that figure refers to the initiative, not necessarily to the specific repo transaction. In the trade, the Treasury security was delivered against payment.

The two arrangements differ in when the ownership record begins. SSDS+ manages records for tokenized bonds from issuance, while the U.S. repo token referred to an asset already in custody. EconoTimes previously covered DTCC’s July production event.
