U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Thursday that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has reached a dangerous stalemate, raising concerns about further military escalation and the possibility of a broader regional conflict involving NATO countries.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Portugal, Rubio emphasized that the United States remains committed to pursuing a diplomatic solution that would bring a lasting end to the four-year conflict.
"We’d love to see a negotiated settlement to this war that is permanent, enduring, and fair. And that’s what we’re committed to continuing to do," Rubio said.
His remarks come as President Donald Trump's administration intensifies diplomatic efforts to revive peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian negotiators are scheduled to visit the United States on Friday and Saturday for discussions aimed at identifying potential pathways toward ending Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II.
Despite renewed diplomatic initiatives, fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces continues to threaten regional stability. Both countries have expanded their drone operations throughout the year, increasingly targeting critical infrastructure and economic facilities.
Recent attacks have affected energy installations, oil refineries, shipping ports, and vessels transporting oil and grain. Commercial infrastructure, including e-commerce warehouses and data centers, has also become vulnerable as the conflict extends beyond traditional military targets.
Rubio warned that continued escalation could have serious consequences for neighboring countries, particularly members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
"That escalation could wind up being a sabotage campaign in neighboring countries that are members of NATO," Rubio said.
He cautioned that additional provocations could rapidly transform the Russia-Ukraine conflict into a much larger and more dangerous regional confrontation.
The secretary of state stressed that Washington remains prepared to facilitate negotiations but warned against pursuing diplomatic initiatives that fail to produce meaningful results.
"This war needs to end in a negotiated settlement. The sooner, the better. The United States stands ready to facilitate that," Rubio said.
He added that the Trump administration would continue seeking diplomatic progress while avoiding negotiations that offer little prospect of success.
Rubio's comments underscore growing concerns over the prolonged Ukraine war, as Washington seeks a sustainable peace agreement while attempting to prevent further military escalation across Europe.
