Anadolu Ajansı reported Monday, citing ANSA, that Italian President Sergio Mattarella urged swift action against the improper and uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence, warning that if people merely watched computing power expand, the fundamental values of human life and democracy could be undermined.

Speaking at the opening of the Festival of Regions on Monday, Oct. 26, Mattarella called for appropriate rules to be adopted and put into effect. He said false information circulated online can sway public opinion and influence people’s choices.

He also described intensifying rivalry among a small number of players, saying science cannot currently foresee its eventual outcomes. Separately, he warned that the development of machine-learning models raises the risk of losing control over technological processes.

Mattarella said that if people remain onlookers as computing capacity grows in every direction, core values involving human life and democracy could be undermined.
