During a Friday visit to Germany’s Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pointed to the center’s work as evidence Europe could build greater scientific independence, Anadolu Agency reported.
Anadolu Agency said the government’s Hightech Agenda is designed to bolster economic strength and employment while lowering reliance on other countries; it covers artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and microelectronics.
Anadolu Agency said another policy would pair investment and skilled labor for new factories with faster movement of research into manufacturing.
Merz said, “We are in Europe in a position to become scientifically sovereign.” He added that the continent was moving toward that goal. He also said he had once hesitated to use the term “sovereignty” but now did so with “deep inner conviction,” according to Anadolu.
