A reported suspension of Micron Technology Inc.’s planned Taoyuan memory plant has raised questions about a major Taiwan investment as the company and its union remain at odds over profit sharing.

Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Micron had put the project on hold and that activity at the site had dwindled to minor safety work. The outlet placed the proposed investment at $3 billion to $4.5 billion. It said the facility was expected to produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM, with operations planned to begin in 2028.

Micron said its Taiwan operations were continuing normally and that it was confident customers would receive uninterrupted service. The company did not address whether construction at the proposed Taoyuan site had stopped.

The Taoyuan union wants a long-term formula that would allocate 15% of operating profit to employees. Its demand does not identify which parts of Micron’s business would determine the profit figure. Focus Taiwan/CNA reported that the union had criticized Micron’s Incentive Pay Plan for lacking transparency.

The union said about 70% of its members rejected an earlier profit-sharing offer, extending a dispute reflected in the previous vote on Micron’s proposal.

Micron reached a separate labor agreement with its Taichung union in October. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said AI-driven growth had supported the island’s memory industry and called for continued talks in Taoyuan.

CNA reported that the Nov. 6 mediation ended without an agreement. Micron said Taoyuan City had arranged another session, but CNA did not report a date.
