Mississippi’s Senate race remained unresolved Wednesday, as an earlier CBS News update placed Cindy Hyde-Smith and Scott Colom 29 ballots or fewer apart after 97% of votes had been counted.
Hyde-Smith is the Republican incumbent, and Colom is the Democratic challenger. The Federal Election Commission lists Tuesday, Nov. 3, as the general election date.
Reuters had described the race as competitive before Election Day, an assessment EconoTimes covered in an earlier story on the Mississippi contest.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that Mississippi last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 1982. AP said Colom could become the state’s first Black U.S. senator since Reconstruction. Before the election, Republicans held 53 of the Senate’s 100 seats, AP reported.
