PTI reported an aggregate cost overrun of ₹3,21,976 crore, or about ₹3.22 trillion, for India’s monitored central infrastructure projects, while MoSPI’s latest reported cost was ₹37.56 trillion.
PTI reported an original estimate of ₹34,33,827 crore and a revised total of ₹37,55,803 crore, a difference of ₹3,21,976 crore.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said its September 2026 update covered 1,853 projects costing at least ₹150 crore each, across 17 central ministries and departments. Cumulative expenditure was ₹17.73 lakh crore, or 47.21% of the portfolio’s latest reported cost.
MoSPI counted 654 projects, about 35% of the total, above 80% physical progress. Separately, 338 projects, roughly 18%, had passed 80% financial completion.
Transport and Logistics accounted for 1,320 projects with a combined latest cost of ₹20.07 lakh crore. At the ministry level, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways led by project count, with 974 projects and a latest cost of ₹9.46 lakh crore. MoSPI said 83 projects were added to monitoring during September.
The ministry’s update drew on submissions from ministries and departments for selected infrastructure categories and subsectors in the Department of Economic Affairs’ Harmonized Master List; it did not cover the entire list. MoSPI said the listed costs were the latest available. Its Flash Report for October 2026 is scheduled for release Nov. 25.
