Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged institutional reform and a stronger Global South role in international decisions at a New Delhi summit Thursday, bringing governance questions into a gathering focused on a changing world order.

Modi’s official website said he called for multilateral institutions to be reformed and the Global South to have more influence in international decision-making. He also urged countries to sustain cooperation when crises arise, calling for “a greater voice for the Global South.”

The NDTV World Summit took place in New Delhi on Oct. 22-23 under the theme “A World Between Orders.” Its official program listed Modi for a keynote and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for a session titled “India: The Geopolitics of Sovereign Choice.” The agenda covered geopolitics, the global economy, artificial intelligence, technology and security.

NDTV framed the summit around a transition from an established global order toward an emerging one. Its description pointed to changing alliances, economic integration and India’s role as issues in that shift.

After conversion from the outlet’s IST timestamps, NDTV’s live coverage placed Jaishankar’s remark at 10:50 a.m. ET (14:50 UTC), five minutes before it reported Modi’s arrival at 10:55 a.m. ET (14:55 UTC). The outlet said Modi’s keynote began at 11:02 a.m. ET (15:02 UTC).

NDTV attributed the line “We serve our national interest by contributing to global good” to Jaishankar during the coverage. The program listed his session as a discussion of India’s geopolitical choices.

NDTV’s agenda also listed “Sri Lanka’s Economic Reset: Recovery, Resilience and the Road Ahead,” with Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe. EconoTimes previously covered the scheduled discussion on Sri Lanka’s recovery as another item on the two-day program.

The summit program is scheduled to run through Friday, Oct. 23.
