“Mortal Kombat 11” is arguably the most violent video games to ever graced the gaming market. So violent, in fact, that some of its developers have been experiencing negative effects on their mental health, with one being diagnosed with PTSD, Kotaku reported.
While gamers would be exposed to these animations in mere seconds, developers of “Mortal Kombat 11” are dealing with it on a longer basis. Realism, after all, is key in capturing these gory fatalities.
To achieve such realism, “Mortal Kombat 11” developers gathered a lot of violent materials and immerse themselves in them, sometimes for weeks on end. Unsurprisingly, this took a toll on several of them, with some reporting seeing violent and disturbing images in real life. One developer reported that he couldn’t stand to look at his dog anymore since every time he does he would imagine all of his pet’s internal organs.
Another said that his sleeping pattern had been affected due to having extremely violent dreams, adding that they would sometimes choose to stay awake just to avoid the harrowing experience. There’s no denying that being exposed to various violent content led to this outcome. Where previous entry for the series depicted over-the-top killings, “Mortal Kombat 11” chose photorealism instead.
“You’d walk around the office, and one guy would be watching hangings on YouTube, another guy would be looking at pictures of murder victims, someone else would be watching a video of a cow being slaughtered,” one dev revealed. While this may be spine-chilling for some, the developers said that the scariest part is being desensitized to it all. Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm has so far remained mum about this “Mortal Kombat 11” issue despite the news blowing up all over the web.
As for the developers, some of them has left the project, and others are simply trying to find ways how to counter such a creative process. One suggested that talking with other devs might help solve this issue and a support group should be put in place to provide an outlet for those who can’t shake the graphic images out their head. In the meantime, “Mortal Kombat 11” is preparing to launch its first DLC although there’s still no news when this will be released, Daily Star reported.
