Mos Burger is celebrating the 2024 tsukimi season with the return of its fan-favorite Tsukimi Focaccia burgers. This year, the chain introduces the Menchi Katsu Focaccia alongside its classic versions, available from September 11 to mid-November.

Mos Burger Shines This Tsukimi Season with Focaccia Favorites and a New Menchi Katsu Option

A triple-moon spectacle has returned at Japan’s renowned homegrown burger chain, Mos Burger.

As the country’s second-largest burger chain, Mos Burger often operates in the shadow of fast-food giant McDonald’s. However, during the annual autumn festival of tsukimi (literally “moon-viewing”), the chain steps into the spotlight with a seasonal focaccia burger that first gained widespread attention in 2022, inspired by the beloved anime Sailor Moon.

Though the burger is no longer officially linked to Sailor Moon, it has become so popular that it has returned every autumn. This year, Mos Burger is offering two versions of the fan-favorite: the regular Tsukimi Focaccia, priced at 580 yen (US$3.97), and the Barbecue Focaccia, available for 510 yen.

According to SoraNews24, both focaccias feature an original sauce made from ingredients like cabbage and fried eggplant, with the aroma of smoky hickory wood enhancing their unique flavor. The regular Tsukimi Focaccia includes a soft-yolk egg, which is in keeping with the Tsukimi tradition of using eggs to represent the full moon. The Barbecue Focaccia offers an egg-free alternative for those who prefer a sausage-forward option.

A new addition to this seasonal lineup is the Menchi Katsu Focaccia, priced at 460 yen. This minced beef and pork cutlet burger, accompanied by a rich red wine sauce, represents the "dark side of the moon," offering a hearty and satisfying depth of flavor.

As the only burger chain to feature focaccia bread on its tsukimi menu, Mos Burger stands out as a must-visit destination this autumn. The limited-time offerings will be available from September 11 until mid-November.

Moon-Viewing Meets Culinary Delight: Mos Burger’s Tsukimi Focaccia Combines Tradition with Flavor

In the September 2022 report, Autumn in Japan isn’t just about moon-viewing; it’s also about moon-viewing sandwiches. The trend began when burger chains adopted the tsukimi concept from noodle restaurants, which traditionally referred to dropping a raw egg into hot broth, with the egg’s shape and color resembling the full moon. For tsukimi sandwiches, the egg is soft-cooked, and this year’s offerings from Mos Burger include:

  • The Tsukimi Focaccia.
  • Featuring both a soft-boiled egg and a crescent-shaped sausage.
  • Symbolizing the moon in its various phases.

Fans of Sailor Moon, a character closely associated with lunar imagery, will remember the tsukimi promotion led by the iconic anime. While the collaboration may no longer be in effect, the influence lingers, with voice actress Kotono Mitsuishi once famously declaring, “In the name of the moon, it’s delicious!”

Despite the full moon appearing in early September last year, Mos Burger’s Tsukimi Focaccia didn’t hit stores until later; however, when it did, its rich, satisfying flavors more than made up for any delay.

The Tsukimi Focaccia features two critical "moon" elements: a soft-boiled egg and a crescent-shaped sausage, which create a harmonious bite together. The tender, melty egg contrasts with the firm, savory sausage, producing an indulgent and flavorful combination. The focaccia also features a smoky barbecue sauce accompanied by eggplant, mushrooms, shredded cabbage, and lettuce. These absorb the rich, saucy elements, enhancing the overall flavor profile.

Much like how Sailor Moon and her fellow Senshi complement each other in their battle against evil, the various components of the Tsukimi Focaccia—sausage, egg, sauce, and vegetables—blend seamlessly, creating a fast-food experience that feels both complex and satisfying. It’s no wonder Mos Burger continues to delight its customers with these seasonal treats, and the Tsukimi Focaccia is one that fans will surely enjoy any time of day or night.
