Most Industrial Companies Beat EPS Estimates in Weekly Count

The count measures how often forecasts were topped, not the size of the earnings surprises.

Thirty-three of 37 industrial companies in the latest weekly count reported earnings per share (EPS) above analyst estimates. The result shows how often companies topped forecasts in the group, but it does not measure the size of those earnings surprises.

A beat count and the amount earnings exceed estimates are separate measures. The first records whether each company finished above its forecast; the second measures the size of the difference. An earlier EconoTimes earnings analysis explained the distinction in the context of S&P 500 results.

For broader context, an Oct. 31 EconoTimes tally across five industries counted 147 companies above EPS estimates among 177 reporters. The tally also recorded 26 companies below estimates, while 79% reported earnings growth from a year earlier. Its broader industry coverage included pharmaceutical and mega-cap technology companies, along with firms in energy, aerospace and consumer goods.
