The Oct. 31 weekly tally showed companies beating estimates for earnings per share (EPS) accounted for 83% of 177 reporters, offering a snapshot of quarterly results across five industries.

The tally counted 147 companies above estimates and 26 below. Seventy-nine percent of the companies reported earnings growth from a year earlier. Results came from pharmaceutical and mega-cap technology companies, as well as firms in energy, aerospace and consumer goods.

A separate season-to-date update covered results through Oct. 23. EPS beats made up 83% of that update's count, while revenue beats accounted for 66%. The figures cover different reporting periods: the Oct. 23 update tracked the season to date, while the Oct. 31 tally covered one week.
