SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk proposed giving his shares to children in America in 2027, a day after artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced a public-benefit fund backed by its equity.
In an Oct. 19 post on X, Musk promised one of his SpaceX shares to every “kid in America.” He called the proposed gift “the first of many” but gave no details of any later distributions. He did not set an age limit, define whether citizenship or residency would count, or explain how the shares would be delivered.
Anthropic said on Oct. 18 that it was establishing the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. It plans to dedicate 5% of its shares, pending stockholder approval. Its board may allocate another 2% of shares to the fund for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. Anthropic said earlier founder and employee commitments bring the total dedicated to public benefit to roughly 20%, before any additions tied to valuation.
Anthropic presented the fund as an alternative to rising executive awards, citing founder pledges and an employee matching program. It said the fund could make large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to selected populations. Replying to Anthropic’s announcement on X, Musk wrote, “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public.”
Musk’s proposal would draw from his personal holdings. An earlier EconoTimes estimate of the proposed gift valued one share for each U.S. resident younger than 18 at about $10.5 billion. That calculation used the U.S. Census Bureau’s estimate of 72,021,348 residents in that age group as of July 1, 2025, and SpaceX’s $146.03 closing share price on Oct. 16. Musk has not adopted that eligibility definition.
Anthropic has yet to specify the fund’s governance arrangements or valuation milestones and says it will publish details in the coming months. SpaceX is scheduled to report third-quarter results after the market closes Tuesday, Oct. 20, and hold a management webcast at 4:30 p.m. ET.
