CHICAGO, April 11, 2018 -- The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has unveiled a new interactive Nursys Authorization to Practice Map. With just a few clicks, the user can see a dynamic, easy to understand visual representation of all the states where a nurse has authorization to practice.
This one-of-a-kind, comprehensive visual display of nurses' privilege to practice in the U.S. is powered by licensure status data provided by participating boards of nursing and state agencies. The map is dynamic and automatically updated, taking into account the current status of all licenses, as continuous data is provided by participating states.
Nurses, nurse employers and the public can now utilize this free resource. It will be especially useful for those with questions about multistate license privileges, based on the recent implementation of the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact. Detailed instructions on how to search by a nurse's Name, License Number or NCSBN ID are available here.
"It took a year in the making, with many discussions with executives at the boards of nursing providing essential feedback for its development," said Nur Rajwany, MS, NCSBN chief information officer. "The boards of nursing and NCSBN staff worked diligently to develop this technology, which makes it easier for nurses, employers and the public to better understand where a nurse in the U.S. holds practice privileges."
Nursys is the only national database for licensure verification for registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) and APRNs. Nursys is designated as a primary source equivalent database through a written agreement with participating BONs. Nursys is live and dynamic, and all updates to the system are reflected immediately, pushed directly from participating BON databases through frequent, secured data updates. Adding certification information that is readily available adds another layer of data that is accessible to the BONs.
About NCSBN
NCSBN marks its 40th anniversary milestone in 2018 with the inspiring theme of “Regulatory Excellence Surging Toward the Future.” Founded March 15, 1978, as an independent not-for-profit organization, NCSBN was initially created to lessen the burdens of state governments and bring together boards of nursing (BONs) to act and counsel together on matters of common interest. It has evolved into one of the leading voices of regulation across the world.
NCSBN’s membership is comprised of BONs in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories — American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. There are also 30 associate members that are either nursing regulatory bodies or empowered regulatory authorities from other countries or territories.
NCSBN Member Boards protect the public by ensuring that safe and competent nursing care is provided by licensed nurses. These BONs regulate more than 4.8 million licensed nurses.
Mission: NCSBN provides education, service and research through collaborative leadership to promote evidence-based regulatory excellence for patient safety and public protection.
The statements and opinions expressed are those of NCSBN and not the individual member state or territorial boards of nursing.
