NVIDIA presented an optical interconnect concept for hyperscale AI clusters at SEMICON West 2026, placing optical engines alongside a GPU to bring signal conversion nearer to the chip core.

The design, called Optics-on-Interposer (OOI), uses a larger silicon interposer in place of the package’s organic substrate. The silicon layer carries both the GPU and the optical engines.

With the engines on the same silicon layer as the GPU, the point where light signals become electrical signals sits closer to the chip core.
