As the Presidential bid of the front-runner, Francois Fillon is in decline amid a payment scandal, where he paid his wife and children public money for fake jobs, the probability of a win by the National Front leader Marin Le Pen is on the rise. Launching her bid in front of more than three thousand supporters, Ms. Le pen laid out a plan to pull the country out of the Eurozone, impose a tax on foreign workers, impose trade barriers, and stop Islamic immigration to the country. She said that France is being threatened by economic globalization and an Islamic invasion.
She said that the winds of change are turning around the world while citing the examples of Brexit as well as the victory for Donald Trump in the US election. After her speech, it is quite clear that anti-immigration would remain one of her core agendas along with bringing France out of the Euro mechanism. She, however, said that she would try to negotiate new terms for France and if she fails in that she would go for the referendum.
Ms. Le Pen is expected to win the first round of the election that would be held on April 23rd, but polls show that she might lose in the second round. However, with Fillon’s bid going down the drain, it is far from clear what impact that might have in the election.
