Polish President Karol Nawrocki turned back while flying to Senegal as a leadership dispute at the Constitutional Tribunal prompted a U.S. call for calm, Anadolu Agency reported.

Anadolu reported that Nawrocki met First President of the Supreme Court Zbigniew Kapinski and Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski at the Presidential Palace on Friday.

Orders issued by Anna Korwin-Piotrowska called for suspending Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski and Vice President Bartlomiej Sochanski, respectively, Anadolu reported. The Tribunal’s account on X said its website had been accessed without authorization, disputed Korwin-Piotrowska’s status as a Tribunal judge and maintained that both officials remained in their posts.

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose called the situation “very serious” and appealed to government officials, police and protesters to avoid provoking violence, Anadolu reported. Warsaw police detained three people after they allegedly climbed the Tribunal’s fence, EconoTimes reported earlier.

Anadolu’s background report traced the dispute to a wider conflict over Poland’s judiciary, including developments beginning in 2015 and European court rulings concerning the Tribunal’s independence.
