Nebraska voters rejected an online sports betting proposal on Nov. 3, turning down Initiative 441's plan to authorize wagering through approved operators and assign state regulators a rulemaking deadline.
Unofficial results from the Nebraska Secretary of State showed 397,583 votes against Initiative 441 and 332,342 in favor. Initiative 440 also failed, with 400,671 against and 329,309 in favor. All 1,322 precincts had reported.
Initiative 441's text would have allowed authorized gaming operators to offer online wagers to people located in Nebraska. It directed the State Racing and Gaming Commission to establish rules by June 1, 2027. Since the initiative failed, those provisions were not adopted.
A study published in the Journal of Financial Economics compared household transaction records across states that legalized online sports betting and found savings declined after legalization. The reductions were larger among frequent bettors and households with limited savings, according to the study. EconoTimes covered the findings in earlier coverage of sports betting and household finances.
