Many Netflix subscribers might not know it yet but the streaming giant has been offering free games for a few months now. And its library just got two additional titles this week, while its first zombie apocalypse shooter title is confirmed to arrive soon.
Netflix Games got its latest additions on Tuesday, namely “Shatter Remastered” and “This Is A True Story.” Fans of arcade games might already be familiar with “Shatter” since its original title was released back in 2009 on PlayStation and PC the following year.
The original “Shatter” was one of the more popular clones of Atari’s “Breakout” game. The “Shatter Remastered” preserves the brick-breaking game mechanics while adding new features like global leaderboards. Netflix subscribers will also play the game with an original electronic music soundtrack created by musician Module.
Netflix Games also added “This Is A Story,” an RPG based on real stories of Sub-Saharan African women focused on their daily struggles of fetching water for their families. The game was developed by Frosty Pop in partnership with the nonprofit Charity: Water. The game features hand-painted art, while its story is based on real interviews by Charity: Water across Sub-Saharan Africa. While having to collect water every day, the character will face other challenges along the way, such as windstorms and poachers.
Both games are already available on Netflix, bringing the streaming platform's total mobile games to 16. But the company also announced that its first FPS game set in a zombie-filled post-apocalyptic world is also in the pipeline. The game “Into the Dead 2: Unleashed” is confirmed to be added in the library soon, but a specific date is still under wraps.
Netflix Games is now available on Android and iOS devices. Subscribers can browse the list of available titles through a dedicated Games tab on the menu bar at the bottom of the app. Once they open a game’s page on the Netflix app, they will find its trailer, preview images, and a Get Game button. Tapping the said button will redirect users to the Play Store or App Store where they can proceed to download the game for free.
