While Massachusetts may be Dunkin's spiritual home, New York has claimed the title for the most locations. With 1,436 Dunkin' stores statewide, New York outpaces Massachusetts and illustrates the brand's reach beyond its New England origins, solidifying its role in the fast-paced city life.

New York Leads in Dunkin’ Locations, Cementing Its Role in the City’s Coffee Culture

When thinking of Dunkin, one can almost smell the warm coffee and fresh baked goods that fill the air upon entering. For many, Dunkin' represents more than just a coffee shop; it’s an integral part of New England’s cultural fabric. With Massachusetts as Dunkin's longtime headquarters, it’s easy to assume the state would have the most locations. Surprisingly, however, that title belongs to New York.

Indeed, New York now leads with 1,436 Dunkin' stores, offering one location for approximately every 13,557 residents. From commuters bustling through Penn Station to locals grabbing an iced coffee on their way to the park, Dunkin' is a staple in New Yorkers’ daily routines. The city’s deep-rooted coffee culture — think of the beloved Central Perk in Friends — underscores how well Dunkin' fits into the city's fast-paced lifestyle that never sleeps.

Despite New York’s Lead, Dunkin's Heart and Heritage Remain Deeply Rooted in Massachusetts

Massachusetts, however, maintains its Dunkin' pride, ranking second with 1,040 locations, followed by Florida with 911 stores, illustrating the brand’s expansion well beyond its Northeast origins.

While New York holds the most locations today, Dunkin’s story began in Quincy, Massachusetts. Originally opened as Open Kettle, the brand rebranded to Dunkin' Donuts in 1950 and has since evolved to simply Dunkin', following the trend of dropping surnames like icons Beyoncé and Cher.

Some traditions, however, endure. The Dunkin' in Weymouth, Massachusetts, remains one of the busiest locations globally and continues to make fresh donuts on-site each day, a nod to the brand’s roots. Dunkin' now stands as the largest coffee and donut chain in the U.S., with over 13,200 locations worldwide. From picking up Munchkins in Manhattan to ordering a cold brew along the Massachusetts coast, Dunkin' has become a fixture across the map. While New York may hold the lead store count, Dunkin's heart remains firmly rooted in New England.
