The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is absent from Kano’s 2027 governorship candidate list, leaving supporters of its proposed pair seeking a place on the ballot before an Oct. 24 appeal deadline.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lists 17 pairs. None includes proposed governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo or proposed running mate Mustapha Kwankwaso.

Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement delivered a petition to INEC’s Kano office on Oct. 16, Channels Television reported. Mustapha Kwankwaso led the delegation and said the group had met the commission’s nomination requirements. The movement is led by former Kano Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner Abdu Zango said his office would forward the petition to INEC headquarters. He said the appeal window runs through Oct. 24.

Separately, Nigeria’s Electoral Act, 2026, gives a registered party 14 days after a candidate list is published to report an omission in writing. The notice must carry the signatures of the party’s national chairman and secretary and include an affidavit. Whether the supporters’ petition meets those requirements is unverified.

INEC’s calendar schedules the governorship vote for Feb. 6, 2027. The appeal window closes Oct. 24.
