Court records reviewed by CBS News show the Odyssey was arrested in Singapore, adding a legal development to the cruise ship’s recent financial and operational troubles.
Singapore court records identify Helmsman LLC as the solicitor involved in the arrest but do not name its client. CBS News cited a person familiar with the matter who said Helmsman likely represents a fuel supplier.
Villa Vie Residences owes a supplier in the region about $500,000, CBS News reported. CBS News said it was unclear whether the supplier hired Helmsman to seek the arrest. CBS News also reported that the lender operates the vessel after Villa Vie missed payments. EconoTimes previously covered the company’s debt during an earlier stop in Singapore.
The vessel reached Cambodia in October, where residents had only a few hours to leave, CBS News reported. CBS News described ship arrest as a legal measure that can detain a vessel or lead to its seizure after a claim.
