The expression “that escalated quickly” should perfectly describe what will happen in “One Piece” chapter 985. Flashbacks to Oden’s memories showed how the alliance between Orochi and Kaido was forged, and the manga will soon present how it ultimately ends – with one of them beheaded.
‘One Piece’ chapter 985 spoilers: Kaido kills Orochi as he declares ‘New Onigashima’ project
Kaido is obviously the more powerful character compared to Orochi, but the Yonko had no reason for eliminating Orochi until “One Piece” chapter 985. The upcoming installment is titled “New Onigashima Project” and it is the very reason why Kaido suddenly decides to kill his long-time collaborator.
In the middle of the festival in Onigashima, Kaido announces in “One Piece” chapter 985 that his alliance with Big Mom should now work on getting an Ancient Weapon and start a war. Kaido will compare this new initiative to how the World Government acquired new military power that led to the dissolution of the Shichibukai. The Yonko then reiterates their desire to also find the One Piece.
To support the magnitude of war that he wants to happen, Kaido declares Onigashima will be moved to the Flower Capital. He plans on making Wano a lawless country and a pirate empire where his son Yamato will be the shogun. This will not sit well with Orochi but his opposition immediately gets him killed as Kaido slashes his head off in “One Piece” chapter 985.
‘One Piece’ chapter 985 hints at Yamato as the next likely nakama of Luffy
“One Piece” chapter 985 spoilers also show some parallels between a crumbling alliance (Kaido and Orochi) and a budding new partnership between Luffy and Yamato. As expected, Yamato knew Ace when Luffy’s brother arrived in Wano. They apparently became close as Yamato even wanted to join his pirate crew at one point.
Sadly, Kaido has imprisoned his son since he was 8 years old. The handcuffs Yamato is wearing were placed by Kaido and it would explode once he tries to flee Wano. Yamato also tells Luffy he had been fighting his father ever since, but he ends up getting beaten every time. Despite all these, Yamato is resolved that boarding Luffy’s ship is his chance to follow Oden’s steps in becoming a pirate. This is where “One Piece” chapter 985 seems to be hinting at who is the next Straw Hats nakama.
“One Piece” chapter 985 does not explicitly mention anything about Yamato being the next nakama, but the comparisons between Yamato and Oden’s desire to be a pirate are uncanny. It would not be surprising if, in the future chapters of Wano Arc, Yamato ends up being the newest official member of the Straw Hats.
Fans will have to wait until Monday, July 20 for the official translations of “One Piece” chapter 985 to be released on Shonen Jump and Manga Plus. But if they are eager to see Orochi getting beheaded by Kaido, leaked scans of the next chapter are now available in online forum discussions.
