OpenAI has reportedly reached a major financial milestone, with its annualized recurring revenue (ARR) in July exceeding the revenue generated during the entire second quarter of 2026. The update, shared by Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar during an internal employee meeting, highlights the rapid commercial momentum behind the artificial intelligence company as it prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO).
According to a CNBC report, Friar discussed the company’s latest performance alongside OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor, emphasizing that the second quarter had already delivered strong results. Despite that, July alone pushed annualized recurring revenue beyond the previous quarter’s total, signaling accelerating demand for the company’s AI products and services.
Executives credited the growth to several recent product launches, including the GPT-5.6 family of AI models, the introduction of ChatGPT Work for enterprise customers, and rising adoption of Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding assistant. These offerings have helped expand the company’s presence in both consumer and business markets while strengthening recurring subscription revenue.
The revenue milestone comes as OpenAI works to support its valuation of more than $800 billion amid intensifying competition across the artificial intelligence industry. Rivals such as Anthropic and Google continue to roll out advanced AI models, while Chinese developers are also gaining ground with lower-cost alternatives.
Earlier this month, China-based Moonshot AI introduced its Kimi K3 model, claiming it outperformed leading AI systems from both OpenAI and Anthropic in selected benchmark tests. The launch reflects the increasingly competitive global race to develop more capable and affordable AI technologies.
Despite mounting competitive pressure, OpenAI appears focused on expanding its enterprise business and accelerating product innovation to sustain growth. Investors are closely monitoring the company’s financial progress as reports suggest OpenAI could file for its highly anticipated IPO within the next several quarters. A successful public listing would rank among the most closely watched technology offerings in recent years, underscoring the growing importance of generative AI in the global software market.
