OpenAI is rolling out a U.S. beta that lets ChatGPT Pro subscribers reach its Dots through iMessage on iPhone or RCS on Android, extending agent updates beyond the ChatGPT app.
OpenAI’s release notes dated Oct. 28 describe the beta for U.S. Pro subscribers. Users can send text messages, photos and voice messages in one-to-one exchanges. A Dot can also send task updates without waiting for another prompt. The company says users can choose which developments go to their phones by text, leaving routine progress messages in ChatGPT.
To enable the channel, users go to a Dot’s profile in the ChatGPT mobile app, desktop app or desktop browser. They select Texting, verify a phone number and save the contact card sent by the Dot. iPhone users must send messages from the number they verified, while Android users need RCS enabled in their messaging app.
OpenAI says neither the Dot nor the company can access a user’s other text conversations through this setup. It identifies Linq as the third-party messaging provider and says it conducted penetration testing with its frontier models and outside security firms. Texting is limited to one-to-one chats; group conversations, phone calls and FaceTime are unsupported.
OpenAI introduced Dots on Sept. 29, saying the agents can continue tasks between conversations and return with results or questions requiring user input. The company says Dots can draw on relevant ChatGPT conversations and connected channels, and that a Dot’s memory and plugins carry across the app and texting. The announcement page shows an Oct. 26-30 date range; the release notes are dated Oct. 28.
The feature adds a text channel to a topic in EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of user-data and spending questions around personal AI agents. OpenAI has not announced a timetable for access beyond U.S. Pro subscribers.
