OpenAI and Kakao have announced a strategic partnership to develop AI solutions tailored for South Korea. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Kakao CEO Chung Shina revealed the collaboration during a press conference in Seoul, highlighting plans to integrate OpenAI's technology into Kakao's products.
Altman also stated that OpenAI is "actively considering" participation in Korea's AI computing center project, signaling potential investment. Additionally, he acknowledged that several Korean companies will play key roles in the U.S. Stargate data center project, though details of those partnerships remain confidential.
The partnership strengthens Kakao's AI capabilities while expanding OpenAI’s presence in South Korea. As Kakao dominates Korea's chat app market, integrating OpenAI’s models into its ecosystem could drive innovation across messaging, search, and other digital services.
This move aligns with South Korea’s growing focus on AI development, positioning the country as a key player in the global AI race. OpenAI’s involvement in Korea’s AI infrastructure could accelerate advancements in AI research, cloud computing, and enterprise applications.
With AI adoption rising worldwide, this collaboration underscores the increasing demand for localized AI solutions. By leveraging OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, Kakao aims to enhance user experiences and expand AI-driven functionalities.
The partnership is expected to fuel AI growth in South Korea, benefiting businesses and consumers alike while strengthening the nation’s position in the global AI landscape.
