OpenAI's Images 2.6 update gives ChatGPT and API users GIF creation and adds image-generation features to Codex, expanding the ways developers and subscribers can produce visual content.

OpenAI announced a worldwide rollout Nov. 4 for ChatGPT and Codex subscription tiers across web, desktop and mobile. The update also adds safeguards for GIF creation.

OpenAI said its ChatGPT, Codex and API services together generate four billion images per week, but it gave no GIF-only figure. Its Sept. 8 Images 2.5 launch cited more than three billion weekly creations from ChatGPT Images and GPT-Image API models; the two totals cover different product groupings and cannot show a direct increase.

The API offers GPT-Image-2.6 Flare for speed and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst for higher quality at medium or high settings. OpenAI said image generation is 50% faster than before; a low-quality Flare image can be ready in as few as six seconds.
