In a bold move against Google, OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Search, enhancing its AI with powerful search capabilities. Powered by GPT-4o, this new feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus users. Here's how you can get started today.
OpenAI Challenges Google with ChatGPT Search Integration
With the integration of search capabilities in ChatGPT, OpenAI is now challenging Google and Microsoft Bing, putting an end to speculation that has persisted for more than a year. The GPT-4o model supports the new search function, which is an improvement on the SearchGPT prototype that was introduced earlier this year.
According to OpenAI, in order to give users relevant results, ChatGPT search shares "dissociated search queries" with third-party search providers like Bing. In order to deliver more accurate search results, ChatGPT also shares users' IP addresses with third-party search providers.
Sam Altman Praises the New Feature
An X post by Sam Altman praised ChatGPT's improved search function, calling it "really good":
Rollout Plans for Users
OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT Search will be available to its Enterprise and Education customers in the "coming weeks" when it is rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscriptions.
According to Mint, the new feature will be available to free ChatGPT users in the coming months. Anyone using the ChatGPT website, mobile app, or desktop app will be able to take advantage of the new feature.
Future Enhancements and Integrations
According to the AI firm, which has backing from Microsoft, it intends to integrate the new search function into its Advanced Voice mode and possibly even for users who are logged out in the future. Additionally, efforts are afoot to leverage the o1 reasoning models to enhance the search capability even further in areas such as commerce and travel.
