Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met Iran’s president and parliament speaker after arriving in Tehran on Oct. 20, Nournews reported, amid U.S.-Iran tensions.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said relations between the neighboring countries would be the main focus of the visit, while negotiations would also come up. Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported that Munir traveled with a Pakistani delegation.
Nournews identified the Iranian leaders as President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. It said the meetings dealt with ties between Pakistan and Iran and political and security issues in the region.
Pakistan has played a mediation role between Iran and the United States, according to Anadolu Agency. Before Munir arrived, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said his planned Tehran meetings would address efforts to end the U.S.-Iran conflict and developments across the region.
Nournews described the trip as Munir’s fifth official visit to Iran and said his previous visit was Aug. 24. Pakistan’s military said the talks that day addressed ways to prevent further escalation and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
