Marseille imposed a curfew on unaccompanied minors in designated parts of the city on Oct. 20 as Paris and Lyon renewed targeted overnight restrictions after weekend unrest.
The Marseille prefecture set the curfew from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET (10 p.m. to 5 a.m. CEST). The Associated Press reported that it applies to minors without an accompanying adult. Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan said the measure could ease pressure on shops and help police, while calling for more officers across the city.
In Lyon, the Rhône prefecture renewed a curfew in part of the city center from 3 p.m. ET Oct. 20 to midnight ET Oct. 21 (9 p.m. to 6 a.m. CEST). It said the previous night’s restriction had helped keep the area calm. The prefecture said representatives of commerce, crafts, restaurants and hotels were satisfied with those earlier measures.
Paris police restricted movement on the central esplanade of Place de la République and part of Les Halles from 5 p.m. ET Oct. 20 to midnight ET Oct. 21 (11 p.m. to 6 a.m. CEST). City guidance allowed residents, workers and emergency personnel to enter under specified conditions. A separate ban on undeclared gatherings remained in effect in several parts of the capital.
Lyon had already imposed a targeted curfew after the demonstrations. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu told lawmakers that local businesses had sought curfews after the Oct. 17 protests over living costs and school conditions.
Lecornu said a security plan for further protests on Oct. 24 would be presented to him on Oct. 22. He said the police deployment on Oct. 24 would be substantial.
