Patanjali Foods said it is filing an appeal over a Madhya Pradesh cow ghee sales recall order, which it expects to have no material financial or operational effect beyond one batch’s value.

In an Oct. 23 exchange filing, the company said it received the order by email that day. Dated Oct. 21, the order came from the designated officer at the Food and Drug Administration office in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh.

The filing says the order concerns the recall of sales connected with one batch of cow ghee in Burhanpur. It reports that a sample failed to meet requirements under 2011 food safety regulations. The company did not identify the batch number, sample date, test result, measured parameter or specific provision involved.

India’s Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, sets rules covering food from manufacture and storage through distribution, sale and import. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India lists product standards separately from regulations on contaminants, toxins and residues; Patanjali Foods’ filing does not specify which requirement the sample failed to meet.

The company said the matter would have no material effect on its finances or operations apart from the affected batch’s value, but it did not disclose an amount. The filing gives no date for the appeal or hearing schedule.
