Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Nov. 4 that Moscow hopes President Donald Trump will keep pursuing peace in Ukraine, as Democrats won control of both chambers in the U.S. midterms.
“President Trump remains in office; we sincerely hope he will continue his peacemaking efforts,” Peskov said in Russian. A video of his remarks was posted to Telegram by Kremlin pool reporter Alexander Yunashев.
Life.ru reported that Peskov called the U.S. vote and its consequences a domestic matter. He was responding to a question about whether the results could affect Trump’s diplomatic initiatives, the outlet reported.
Democrats won control of the House and Senate in the Nov. 3 elections, the Associated Press reported. The AP said Democrats are expected to challenge parts of Trump’s legislative agenda. The Moscow Times reported that the vote’s effect on American policy in the conflict was not yet known.
Moscow has previously welcomed Washington’s involvement in diplomacy, as EconoTimes reported in coverage of the Kremlin’s view of U.S. mediation.
