Police detained three men aboard the Pune-Jaipur Express in Rajasthan on Oct. 19, a day after gunmen fired at a car carrying Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai, injuring two other people.
The gunfire came at about 7 p.m. IST on Oct. 18 (9:30 a.m. ET; 13:30 UTC), according to Mumbai Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Raj Tilak Roshan, who said three people rode a motorcycle and two shot at the car. Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohit Kumar Garg said the incident happened as Shroff was leaving a private event in Juhu.
Garg said Shroff had no gunshot wounds and two other people, including his driver, were injured. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said gunpowder and glass fragments injured Shroff’s left hand.
Kota Superintendent of Police Tejaswani Gautam said officers set a trap and searched the Pune-Jaipur Express within 15 minutes of receiving information, then detained the suspects aboard the train. Roshan said CCTV footage and technical analysis helped investigators follow the suspects from Mumbai toward Surat and identify their train. The suspects were from Haryana and Bihar, Roshan said, with two from Haryana and one from Bihar.
Gautam said police had not found weapons by the time of her briefing, and preliminary questioning suggested the men planned to go to Delhi and then Nepal. Roshan later said none of the suspects was a minor, correcting an earlier statement by Gautam. He said investigators still did not know the motive, had no record of earlier threat calls to Shroff and were checking a social-media claim of responsibility.
