Lower Austria police spokesperson Stefan Loidl said an email concerned four flights serving Vienna Airport on Nov. 5; a separate warning to Polish authorities prompted a Milan-to-Warsaw Wizz Air flight to land in Vienna.
The flights in the Vienna email were not publicly identified. The Wizz Air landing followed a separate warning received by Polish authorities.
The Associated Press reported that aviation security expert Philip Baum estimated a flight disruption could cost an airline up to $250,000. Baum said government agencies cover the cost of military escorts.
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, at least seven passenger flights across Europe were targeted, prompting searches and a temporary airport closure in Poland, EconoTimes previously reported.
European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas said the EU had activated a system for sharing aviation-security information as national investigations continued. He said authorities had not established whether the incidents were linked.
