A bomb threat that Wizz Air said it received during a flight sent the Sofia-bound service to Budapest on Nov. 2, prompting a response from Hungary’s defense ministry.
The flight had departed London Luton for Sofia before it sought clearance to land at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, Hungary’s Ministry of Defence said. NATO’s air-defense readiness service issued an ALPHA alert, the ministry said. It said a Gripen took off within minutes to secure the airliner’s landing, then returned to Kecskemét. Police handled follow-up measures, according to the ministry.
Wizz Air said security checks covered passengers and the aircraft after it landed safely. The company reported that the plane taxied to a designated stand and said it was cooperating with authorities.
